Owning Your Body

Owning Your Body

Your appearance; whether sleek and confident, relaxed and casual, or sloppy and loose—is often reduced to the fit of your clothing. Finding the right fit and wearing your true size can give you power and poise in your day-to-day life. This can be difficult for some people because there is not much consistency across labels in sizing. What is a “6” in one brand could be an “8” or “10” in another. Size is but a number—it all comes down to knowing your body type and owning your physique.

Knowing your body type is key to understanding yourself and ultimately your fashion choices. You could be a pear like Beyoncé, apple like Melissa McCarthy, rectangle like Cameron Diaz, or hourglass like Kim Kardashian. When you can define yourself as a certain body type, then you can purchase clothing that enhances your best qualities.

Master the Pear-fect Look

Think about Eva Mendes, Jennifer Love-Hewitt, and Katherine Heigl as your celebrity icons for this body shape. If you define with this body shape then your hips are wider than your shoulders and you have a rounded bottom with a well-defined waist. Your best assets are your shoulders and torso. Your fashion goals should be to emphasize your slim waist and arms and to add volume to your upper body.

QUICK TIPS:

·      Wear A-line skirts

·      Keep hems wide on pants, dresses, and skirts to balance the hips

·      Wear strapless dresses to show off the arms

·      Wear tops with ruffles on top to add volume

·      Wear pointy-toes flats or heels to elongate your legs

·      Square and cowl necklines will flatter you best

·      Dark colored bottoms will help to blend wider hips

Having Class as an Hourglass

It’s all about curves, curves, curves! Khloé Kardashian, Scarlett Johansson, Halle Berry, and Vanessa Minnillo are perfect examples of this body type. Women who have hourglass figures should focus on balance. Putting emphasis on the bust and the thighs is important as to draw eyes to their tiny waist. This is why hourglass figures should never wear baggy clothing because they risk loosing waist definition.

·      Wear fitted dresses (example: bodycon dress)

·      Wear skinny or straight leg jeans

·      Avoid looks that add bulk at the waist

·      Avoid ponchos and straight-styled sweaters

·      Wear a belt at the waist to enhance your shape

·      Wear a good bra that showcases the bust

·      Go for high-waisted skirts, jeans, and shorts

Rockin’ the Rectangle

The rectangle shape speaks for itself; flat without much vertical definition. The shoulders, waist and hips are similar in width. Some celebs that rock the rectangle look are Natalie Portman, Cameron Diaz, and Kate Hudson. I define with these celebs because I am a rectangle shape too. Rectangle's best assets are their arms and legs, but their biggest challenge is finding ways to create curves and a clear waistline. For me, I like to focus on my legs. I am 6 feet tall so whenever I get the chance I love to wear mid-thigh length dresses and skirts. Adding a killer pear of heels also adds to the illusion of having legs for miles.

·      Sweetheart necklines are good for creating curves

·      Wear long jackets to create a lean look

·      Try over-the-knee boots or over-the-knee sandals to enhance your length

·      Stay away from overwhelming and shapeless styles

·      Layer your clothing to add dimensions

·      Wear dresses with ruching to create curves

·      Try wearing tops with collars or other detail to flatter your chest

Be the Apple of Everyone’s Eye

A few fierce females with apple body shapes are Drew Barrymore, Queen Latifah, Eva Longoria, and Jennifer Hudson. These gals carry most of their weight above their hips. Their shoulders, ribs, and back are broad but their legs are very thin. Apple’s best assets are their legs! If you're an apple, your fashion goal should be to elongate the torso and find pieces that flaunt your supermodel legs.

QUICK TIPS:

·      Wear a deep v-neck to create the illusion of a longer torso

·      Wear your belt at the smallest part of your waist

·      Invest in a killer pear of dark wash skinny jeans

·      Wear short skirts that show off the legs

·      Wear empire styled tops

·      Wear A-line dresses

·      Draw attention away from the midsection by wearing a structured jacket over dresse

At the end of the day it is your choice to wear what you want. But when you feel good in your clothes, you radiate confidence, and who doesn’t love that? Whether your best features are your legs, arms, waist, or curves never be afraid to show them off. OWN your body.
