ROTM: Lexi, the inside life of a makeup artist

Lexi Jourdin

A TV & film makeup artist from The Make-up Designory (MUD) in NYC

Lexi has always been drawn to fashion and makeup—it was just something that she enjoyed doing in her spare time. Now she is thriving in her career and wouldn't have it any other way, "I'm living my dream. As someone wise once told me, 'if you love your job, you'll never work a day in your life," and Lexi seems to being doing just that.

She handles everything from stage makeup to prosthetics like scars, beards, monsters and more. Monsters are the most difficult for her to create—for example, she reads a TV script, draws from inspiration and brings to life what is written by the producers. I guess you could say she's the one behind making TV magic.

Her job sounds glamours, does it not? But when Lexi isn’t busy making over actors and actresses, you can find her hanging out with her husband, her dog ‘Noodle’, or at Chuck E. Cheese’s with her three sons. She's also a fashionista and loves treating herself to the latest and greatest in today's trends.

When it comes to herself, she saves her money to buy her not-so-guilty pleasures—especially jewelry. In fact, for the past few months Lexi has been reeling in this beautiful Ross Simons pave bracelet. Lexi has been in love with this piece since she first saw it and in just a few short weeks, she'll have it all to herself!

On the other hand, when it comes to makeup, she buys what she needs when she needs it, "If I'm saving for makeup, I can't work." Lexi buys her makeup at any local drug store, "I just buy buy buy." She fills her makeup kid with whatever is "fad-ish" whether it's electric blue eyeliner or anything else that's trending. When it comes to her professional makeup kit, she goes for products that are better for TV and film application. You could find products from RCMA and AJ Crimson in her professional makeup kit.

Here's some more from our Reeler of the Month, Lexi:

Q: Who are some of your favorite fellow makeup gurus?

A: I love YouTube. Specifically: Chrisspy, Nitraa B, Patrick Starrr and Fumi Desalu-Vold. Fumi Desalu-Vold is probably the only YouTuber that can convince me into buying a $60 Louis Vuitton lipstick. (Go give these gurus a look!)

Q: Which movies or shows do you think do a good job at professional makeup and prosthetics?

A: Most people wouldn't notice but when I watch movies I look at the detail of makeup work. The prosthetics in Nightmare on Elm Street and the makeup done on Queens Sugar on the O Network are flawless.

Q: What's trending right now for spring and summer in cosmetics?

A: The bronze sun kissed look is in for this spring and summer. Bobbie Brown has great bronzers that are radiant and give you a healthy glow. The dewy look is also in. Kevyn Aucoin has shimmers and gossamer powders that evoke this look. Overall, nothing too harsh. Think of Nicole Kidman's or Emma Stone's classic, soft, airy and feminine makeup looks.

Q: If you could do any celebrity's makeup, who would it be?

A: Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson or Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga is definitely adventurous and would be willing to take risks.

Q: If you were to give any advise to an aspiring makeup artist, what would it be?

A: Young makeup artists rely heavily on YouTube and don't learn technique. Choose what type of makeup you want to get into—runway, special effects, multimedia makeup etc., and attend school for makeup artistry.

Lexi is such a talented and passionate makeup artist. She is so wise when it comes to understanding the art of makeup and bringing people's visions to life. Lexi Jourdin is KILLING it in the makeup industry! Make sure you check out some of her work.
