ROTM: Jessyca, the New York finance guru
Advertiser and digital marketer in NYC
New Yorker, Jessyca Gonzalez, is our new ROTM. She currently works as a Group Account Director at Big Spaceship and is a #GIRLBOSS. However, that’s not where she started. Finance was her first passion.
From a young age she loved numbers, “I was kind of a dork in high school,” joked Jessyca. This curiosity for numbers definitely paid off in the long term because now, she really enjoys taking care of her finances, “It’s like a game.”
Right out of college she moved to Spain and lived there for a year. Little did she know, it would be a very hard financial obstacle. She was making €600 a month but her rent was €400 leaving her with only €200 to spend on food, transportation, and fun. She had to be very creative in overcoming the hurdle. That meant being innovative with how she cooked and walking 45 minutes to work instead of using the metro.
Her number one tip for managing your money is to keep track of it. No matter how you do it, be aware of what is going on in your bank account. Whether its on an app, in excel, or written in an old school journal, staying on top of things and being smart with your hard earned cash is essential.
Jessyca’s very first Reel was a pair of Bandier leggings. She describes her style as "comfortable… but still trying." One very extraordinary thing about her wardrobe is the fact that she has over 100 pairs of shoes. Yes, that’s right 100! It’s like music to my ears.
Because she is a New Yorker, she must keep her summer gear and winter gear with her. So about 85 pairs of shoes stay with her in Brooklyn and the other 25+ are at her family’s home. Some of her oldest pairs of shoes are from college and she rotates them in and out based on if they are out of style or don’t match her comfy aesthetic anymore.
One particularly interesting pairs of shoes Jessyca owns are her Doc Martens. When she was 12-years-old, her mother would pay her 5 cents per weed she dug up from the backyard. With some extra financial help from her mom and after picking what probably felt like a million weeds—the shoes were finally hers. To this day, she still has them.
When Jessyca isn’t working up a storm or cooking dinner, she loves to Latin dance, guiltily watch the CW and last but not least—eat! She does live in New York City after all, or what I’d like to call a foodie’s heaven.
